Building Blocks for Learning in the News!
Turnaround for Children is excited to release Building Blocks for Learning, a framework for comprehensive student development, grounded in science, in service of equity.
Authored by Brooke Stafford-Brizard, Ph.D., Senior Advisor, with a foreward by Pamela Cantor, M.D., President and CEO, the framework suggests a developmental continuum that starts in infancy and continues through early adulthood. It acknowledges that children don’t always get the same start in life and they don’t all follow the same smooth path through it. It makes the case that all children in K-12 need a specific set of skills and mindsets and that we can’t just assume they are in place when they enter kindergarten. We must teach them, particularly to children whose healthy development has been interrupted by their experiences with adversity.
The paper began with a conversation at Turnaround headquarters about how children develop cognitive and social-emotional skills and mindsets that are essential for success in school and in life. Since its release at Teach for America’s 25th Anniversary Summit, the paper has been published on a variety of platforms focused on education:
