Special Assistant to the Founder and Senior Science Advisor, Pamela Cantor M.D.
Karla Boertzel initially joined Turnaround for Children in 2014 as Manager, Development, where she managed a portfolio of donors and prospects interested in Turnaround’s tool design and systemic impact initiatives. In her current role, Karla is responsible for supporting Turnaround’s Founder and Senior Science Advisor, Pamela Cantor, M.D. with tasks related to thought leadership, research, fundraising and project management.
Karla completed her M.A in mental health counseling and behavioral medicine from Boston University School of Medicine in May 2019. Karla pursued her M.A. in counseling due to her passion for translating science to practice in support of children who have experienced adversity, as she witnessed in her prior role at Turnaround. While supporting Turnaround on a short term, part-time basis, she is simultaneously working towards her license as a professional counselor in the state of New Jersey. Karla holds a B.A. in Spanish from Davidson College.
What book has Influenced you most?
The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog. This book gives me hope that with time, love and empathy, every individual has the capacity not only to learn to cope with trauma, but also to overcome it completely.
What is the greatest invention of all time?
My coffee machine. I have to start my morning with a cup of joe! Without it, I would have far fewer friends at work!
